Railway Contract. Wellington, This Day.

A deputation of members of Parliament waited on the Minister for Railways this morning, to urge the necessity of pushing on the superannuation scheme, and of an amendment of the claasifaction. The Minister said he would have the Superannuation Bill circulated among the officers and staff with a view of bringing it down next session. As to the classification he saw no reason why the bill providing for it should not be put through this session, and ho asked members to. assist him in doing so. Otago Dredging Co. Dunedin. Oct, 3. The shareholders of the Golden Channel Company haVq declined to wind up voluntarily. Breaches of the Licensing Act. The charges of Sunday trading brought by the police against the licensee of the Kensington Hotel and Shades, were dismissed in the first case. The contention that agency was not proved was upheld. In the second case the Magistrate was in doubt and gave the licensee the benefitDredgemaster Drowned.

Dunedin, Oct 3. Alexander M'Lean, dredgemaster of the First Chance dredge was drowned today in the Molyneux. He had paid off the crew and was arranging to leave the dredge in charge of the engineer when he slipped overboard. He appeared to be swimming strongly when he threw up his hands and sank, A Sad Fatality. Chbistchdroh, Oct 3. 0. Soholfield, who for some years has been a clerk in the Public Works office here and who was und«r orders for removal to Wellington was found drowned in the river fleathcote, near Cashmrre tonight.

It transpires that a warrant has been out for his arrest for embezzling £298 of Government money. Scholfield was a widower and leaves a family of two daughters. _ Suicide. G isbobnb This Day. The case in which Annie Drake and Thomas McGovern who were brought back from Auckland on a charge of having stolen furniture belonging to the former’s husband, was dropped by informant at the police court to-day. Gaol Warders Medals. Long service medals are to be issued to gaol warders who have served not less than fourteen years continuously without a black mark.
