SABBATH OBSERVANCE.
(per PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
New Plymouth, Oct. 2. A largely attended public meeting was held to-night at the Presbyterian church of those interested in taking steps to maintain the sanctity of the Sabbath day. The Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist clergy wore represented. Resolutions were carried that the meeting viewed with deep concern, the growing desecration of the Lord’s day, deploring the general disposition to turn the day into one of pleasure. A deputation was appointed to ask fho Borough Council to refuse to permit Sunday concerts in the theatre ; also to urge Christian people in New Plymouth to use every effort to conserve the Sabbath and by precept and example to maintain the sanctity of the Sunday.
The Eev Serpell (Wesleyan) in moving this said he would plead for a Christian sabbath. What was wanted was healthy Christian consciences. The existence of the Christian religion depended on a Christian Sabbath.
The book of sports had done more harm to religion than anything else. He referred to the temptation youths were ex-
posed to and the need of parental example in observing the sanctity of the Sabbath, and was not afraid to open attacks, but was afraid of our legislators, theatres and citizens who openly desecrated the Sabbath.
