Nov Zealanders Stranded at Sydney.
Sydney, Oct 2. A number of returned soldiers claiming to be natives of New Zealand are stranded in Sydney. The man enlisted in South Africa and were given transport passages to Sydney. The New Zealand Government decline to be responsible for the , payment of the balance of the passages home. Later. In the Assembly, in reply to a question as to ‘whether be knew the number of New Zealand soldiers stranded in Sydney and if he would try lo induce Mr Seddon to make arrangements for their return to New Zealand, the Premier said that Government would assist the men as far as possible, l and make full inquiries into the matter. London, Oct. 2. Louis Botha has reached Bothsadorp. The Boers captured a large convoy at Melmoth, Zululand on Sunday, killing six native police and capturing the commander. De Larey and Kemp in strong force attacked General Kekowich at Mouiree, Hustenburg district, on the 25th, but were repulsed. A marauding band of 50 Boers on September 27th attacked a small outpost near Glencoe Junction. The : Boers raided Sequitu district, Zululand capturing much stock and killing 80 natives.
Lord Kitchener’s weekly report, excluding Fort Itala losses, shows 27 Boers killed, 21 wounded, 274 taken prisoners, 48 surrendered ; 138 rifles, 19,400 rounds of ammunition, 189 wagons, 8,270 horses, and 11,260 cattle captured. The Standard and the Times complain that there is now no sign that the Government appreciate the necessity of a vigorous effort to end the war.
The fighting at Itala lasted 19 hours. Besides both the Qrobellaars, Commandants Emmett, Danhauser, Opperman, Scholz and Fotzler participated. The last three were killed.
There was ten hours’ fighting at Fort Piotpeot.
A large force of Boers surprised and captured the post of One-tree Hill, near Dundee hill, held by a volunteer composite regiment, who made a stiff figty.
London, October 2. A patrol of Brishvoldt Carbineers captured Field-cornet Kielly and a party of Boers on the Portuguese frontier. Three Boer prisoners who escaped from Bermuda, were recaptured.
