Rev. J. E. Thompson, I regret to say, was thrown from his bike a couple of days back, severely spraining his arm. Ho In however, progressing rapidly, and a few days it is hoped will see him completely reoovered-

Dr Scot’s final lecture on “ First Aid ** will bo given to-nigbt at 8 p.m. at the Town Hall. As another chance like this may not occur for many a day, it would be well for as many as possible to attend. A young woman named Mary Ann O'Donnell died at the hospital on Monday afternoon. She was only 20 years 6f age at the time of her death. A native of Ireland, she came out to tho colony with her parents when quite a child. The family, a largo one reside at Greenstone where deceased lived with her parents. Tho funeral took place yesterday after* noon when a large assemblage turned oub to testify their sympathy with the family in their bereavement.

The debate Hokitika versus Kumar* clubs on the question “Should the Impcrialistio spirit be fostered” was held at the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. The President occupied the chair. Hokitika was represented by Messrs Perry and Dorreen, Mr Michel unfortunately being unable to attend. The chairman apologised for his absence, and announced that Mr W. B. Gilbert had at the last moment been asked and had consented to take his place, in order to give the visitors equality in numbers With their opponents, Rev E. Wbitehouse, Messrs Sinclair, and Mollraith. Though their leader Mr Michel was absent, the Hokitika representatives mado'a gallant fight for their side. Me Perry opened on behalf of the visitors, and in an able and thoughtful speech urged the advantage of “Imperialism’* Rev E. Wbitohoueo replied in a humorous strain, pointing out the falaoies ol tiis opponent's arguments. Mr Dorreen succeeded Mr Wbitehouse, and ably combatted bis opponent’s contentions, He is turn gave place to Mr Sinclair who delivered an effective speech. When Mr Sinclair retired Mr Gilbert chipped in, and Mr Mcllraith with his characteristic ability closed a very enjoyable evening. All and sundry adjourned at the invitation of the Chairman to the Masonic Hall, whore the ladies had prepared a very tempting supper to welcome the visitors. Toasts, recitations songs and anecdotes in quick succession filled the rest of the evening, and the company broke up about midnight after having enjoyed a very pleasant evening. The club winds up the session on Tuesday, 15th October, with a mock Parliament, when a Compulsory Marriage Bill will be introduced and, it is to oe hoped, passed through all its stages. Kumara lads have received a challenge from the Brunner football team to play a friendly match on Saturday week on the Kumara Eacecourse.
