Account by the only Survivor.
(per press association.)
GisnoiiNß, This Day. James Bc-rtio, survivor of the Whakapia has reached Awanin. The cook, Harry MHer, was the last man washed off the vessel and clung to a spar and drifted within 20 yards of the beach. A native swam out but when close to him Miller disappeared. Before the capsize, the vessel became so full of water that she was quite unmanageable and drifted into a passage between East Island and the mainland, and Captain Bonner fearing she would go ou the rocks dropped anchor. As she swung round, a heavy sea caught and turned her over.
Bertie was the first washed off and aeiz d a piece of wood which assisted him ashore.
