Charge of Embezzlement. Wellington, This Day. Thomas Coon was charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with converting to his own use at Lyttelton on July, 1900, £7O. belonging to the Bank of Now Zealand corporation by which lie was then employed. Counsel for the Bank declined to proceed with the information, and Bell, the Crown Prosecutor, took the case up. Accused was remanded to October 7th. Workers’ Compensation. Aucklvnd, This Day. Smythe v Fulton—a first claim under the Workers’ Compensation Act—came before the Arbitration Court to-day. Smythe, a labourer, was killed by a landslip at Nihotapu while working for Fulton, contractor for the city waterworks.' His father and sisters claimed £4OO from Fulton’s widow, but it was announced in Court that the Insurance Company that had took Pulton’s risk had settled for £205. Land for Eettlemant. Names, This Day. A reward in the Forest Gate Compensation Case Was given this morning on the basis of £5 10s per awe for 8.783 acres. The claimants asked £5 15s 9d and Government offered £4. Sunday Trading. Wellington, September 30. George Payne, licensee of the Western Hotel, was to-day charged with Sunday trading. 'a firemau from the Tarawera which arrived in port shortly after noon, was given liquor after having stated that he was a traveller and had just arrived from Lyttelton. The Court informed the defendant that there wore other points on which applicants for refreshments should be questioned more important than whether they ■wore travellers. It was a startling proposition that the crows of si tips arriving on Sunday could be served with drink in the evening. Judgment would be given in writing.
