Forest Gate Compensation Case. Navike, Sept. 30.

The award in the Forest Gate Compensation ease was given this morning on a basis of £5 10s per acre for 8783 acres. Claimants asked £5 15s 9d and Government offered £4. New Plymouth Band Contest. New Plymouth, September 30. At a meeting of the executive committee of the forthcoming brass band contest held to-night, the following prizes were fixed: Test selection, first, £IOO and medals; second, £SO; third, £25 ; fourth, £ls; fifth, £lO. Marching contest, four prizes, £2O, £ls, £lO, £5. Usual prizes for solos, trios, and quartettes. Public Services suitably Recognised. Dunedin, Sept 30. In acknowledgement of the valuable and special services rendered to the city by Mr R. Chisholm during bis sixteen months in office as Mayor, he was to-day presented with a massive silver tea and coffee service and salver, while an order has been given for the portrait of Mr Chisholm for the Town Hall. The money was raised by public subscription in a few days. The Military School. Wellington, bept 30, The staff of instructors have now settled down t.) work in the newly organised school of military instruction. On Saturday a class of thirty-five noncommissioned officers, representing every corps in the Wellington garrison, completed a five*weeks course of instruction at the school, and during that time the men have attended evening lectures and outdoor exercise on Saturday afternoons. To-morrow fifteen officers from all parts of the Colony begin a course of instruction. A Sign of Prosperity. During the quarter ending to-day there were only two bankruptcies in Wellington city as against sixteen for the corresponding period last night. Inspecting Bank Books. This afternoon tho Stipendiary Magistrate, on the application of the Crown, granted an order giving the Crown liberty >o inspect and take copies of certain entries in the books of the Bank pf New Zealand with reference to the case against Thomas Conn, which was before i the Court this morning. The order was made under the “ Bank and Bankers Act pf XB§o and 1887."
