American Cup Race.
The Columbia wins the first heat by 35 seconds.
An Exciting Finish.
[per PRESS ASSOCIATON —COPYRIGHT.] New York, September 28, The Columbia won with 35 seconds to spare. She often fell astern of the Shamrock during the race,
September 29. Wednesday’s corrected time allowance is 46'6 seconds. For Saturday’s race a ten-knot wind was blowing, and the weather was bright. The Shamrock secured the windward position, and led from the outset, but soon the roughness of the water temporarily favored the Columbia. The Shamrock rounded the mark first, leading for the next four miles. On the homeward run the wind fell to seven knots, and the competitors were almost even for the last half mile, the Columbia winning by 20C yards. The official elapsed time was—Columbia 16,224 seconds, and the Shamrock 16,304 seconds.
The Shamrock throughout was brilliantly handled. After varying fortunes she led on the starboard tack. The Columbia on the port tack was forced about by the Shamrock. The wind increasing the Shamrock did grand work lo windward and gained an advantage. The rivals ran homewards with booms to port and spinnakers to starboard. Although owing to a drop in the wind when within two miles of home the Columbia was leading, it was anybody’s race as both were again even within half a mile from the finish.
