COAL HINES REPORT.

Wellington, September 19. From the annual report of the Inspecting Engineer of the Mines Department ' it appears that during the year ended 31st December, 1901, there were 16 Coal mines in operation, employing 2,460 persona. Tho average output per person ■was 444*71 tons. There were four fatal accidents during the year. Very few of .the non fatal accidents are likely to be attended with disablement of a permanent character, A new coal mining area has been opened up at Pupongo near Collingwood where coal of excellent quality, esSecially for household purposes, has boon iscovered and he adds there is a probability that the coal from the main seam may be of considerable value in connection with the future working of the iron ■i, deposits at Parapara in the event of the , process and smelting with “producer f ’gas ” being adopted. The coal has also flie appearance of .being good steam
