CHRISTCHURCH MUNICIPAL MATTERS.
(per press association.)
Christchurch, September 17,
The City Council has decided to ask the Government -to oppoint ono local body here to control the proposed abattoirs. This action was taken because other bodies had threatened to start abattoirs of their own, and it was thought that the two institutions would be useless.
Steps will be taken by the municipal authorities to establish a public fish market in Christchurch, and a site will be selected soon.
The fire committee of the City Council is collecting information in regard to the use of motors for hauling fire engines, in place of horses. A suggestion was also made in favour of motor water carts.
It has been decided to put down water mains in parts of Christchurch for the supply of water for sanitary, fire prevention and street watering purposes. The machinery for the destructor has arrived. The work of constructing the elevated roadway, shaft and buildings will be gone on with at once. Steps will be taken to have the houses in the city properly numbered. At present this is very much neglected. The doctors complam loudly that they have much difficulty in finding addresses.
