GOLD DREDGING.
Sluicing Operations— The rain which has fallen during the last few days Is expected to give the miners at Back Creek, Cape Terrace and in other parts a ohanoa to resume operations. Hokitika Biter G. D. Company.—Me Olaf Magnus and several of the Dunedin and Christchurch shareholders are expected here at about the end of next week when the Hokitika dredge commences operations.
Greenstone Junction—The repairs to the Greenstone Junction shaft are expected to be finished to-day. In acouple of days the tumbler should be in its place once again and a fresh start made, when let us hope this Company will have reached the end of its chain of misfortunes and a brighter era unfold itself. Greenstone Three Milk.—As usual nc word has been received as to what was the return for last week from the Greenstone Three Mile. Bumonr places it at about 22ozs for 4 days. This is probably near the mark, as we have learned from m reliable source that it is over 20ozs. The dredge will be idle this , week effecting repairs.
Greenstone Cheek —A fair proportion of the return of 23jzs lodwts from the Greenstone Creek was the outcome of the week’s work, so we may expect a satisfactory on Saturday next. O swell Cbeek, Totaba Flat and Caledonia dredges are all well advanced. The former, which has onlykhe tables to erect, should start in a fortnight and the two latter in a month.
The Leviathan dredge met with a mishap late last night. It appears' that in working the machine is supposed to have struck an old tail-race, which speedi’y run off the water from the dam, leaving the dredge stranded. , Beyond delay in closing the aperture and allowing the dam to again fill, little damage has been done.
The Maori Gully pontoons will be launched to-morrow. We understand some of the directors intend being present on tbo occasion.
Tho prospecting of the Fcdderson Gold Dredging claim on the Bullet proves it highly payable, and the company are on the lookout for a suitable dredge. Prospecting has also been done on several other claims on the Buffer, with satisfactory results. Some very rich prospects were obtained by boring a piece of ground close to the Island Creek claim, and the general opinion locally is that the Caledonian lead, struck aud worked on the terraces adjoining, runs right through the flat. Some of this wash went over loz to the yard (tunnelling out), and should the Island Creek dredge get on this lead there is a golden future ahead.
