New Plymouth, Septembers. There was a large attendance at the Hawke’s Bay v. Taranaki match this afternoon. O’Dowda kicked off for Taranaki. After a short bout of up and down play in which M’Carthy did good work for the visitors, Taranaki scored a try, which was not converted. Give and take play ensued. A fine' piece of dribbling by O’Dowda resulted in a goal. After the kick out Taranaki got close to their opponents’ line, but the Hawke s Hay forwards cleared their lines splendidly ; but a dribbling rush of Taranaki added a try not converted. Shortly after, a splendid run by Smith resulted in an easy goal for Taranaki, quickly followed by another goal for tho same team. Hawke’s Bay livened up and scored a goal from a free-kick, and at half-time tlie scores were—Taranaki 18, Hawke’s Bay 3, Tho visitors’ forwards quickly got on a dribbling rush, carrying all before them, but failed to score. Taranaki soon retorted by scoring a goal after gome smart passing and had it all their V , own wa y ;-o the finish. When time was C called Taranaki was 35, and Hawke’s k; gay 3 Bat ifor the over-eagerness of pV 1 *Ka Taranaki forwards the score would p: lave been larger. The backs gave an h ; excellent diVplay.
