GREY SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the above was: held last evening at the Education Hoard’s office. Present —Messrs. Bignell l (chair), Yarrall, Forsyth, Gittos, Harper,. Ring and Eilgour (secretary). From F. Hoglund, secretary of theGymnastic Club, asking the committee topay for the gas that was used in thegymnasium.—Moved by Mr. Yarrall, seconded by Mr. Forsyth, that the gas used by the club bo paid for by the committee.—Carried.
From the Truant Officer, stating that the list of absentees had been larger than usual owing to the prevailing epidemic—influenza. He also visited Dobson and Brunner, and found the' same cause affecting the attendances.— Received.
From Mr. James Kerr, asking to be nominated for a seat on the Grey Education Board.—Resolved that the, letter be received and the secretary call a special meeting to deal with nominations. From the head master forwarding his usual monthly report for August, as follows:—The average number of pupils on the’ roll was 284 boys, and 237 girls, total 471. The average number of absentees was 77-4. The average attendance was 200‘375 boys and 194 , 075 girls. Total 394 - 45. The report also stated that several teachers had been absent with influenza. He regretted that different teachers view matters in different lights, some actuated by sense of duty, go through, the days work often under great difficulties, other seem to be deterred by rain and cold.
Resolved that the Secretary write to Mr Adams informing him that it is the wish of the committee that the teachers should be present at school when able, and as the annual examination is drawing nigh it behoves them to put in as much work as possible before then in order to keep up the average of the school.
From the head-master, stating that owing to wide-spread sickness among the pupils and teachers, the class work had consequently been adversely affected to such a degree that it will need the most vigorous efforts of the teachers, as well m the heartiest co-operation of the children to bring the school up to its usual state of efficiency for the annual examination) and he thought it desirable to forego the usual school children's concert this year. Eesolved that the committee fall in with the headmaster’s suggestion, that the children’s concert be abandoned this year,, and that a sub-committee consisting of Messrs Bing, Bignell, and Kilgour be appointed to arrange for the bolding of an entertainment in aid of the school fund* in the Opera House at some future date. ‘ The Secretary informed tike Committee that the sum or £9 16s had been collected from parents towards the purchase of, fuel for the school.
The Visiting Committee—Messrs Harper and Gittos —stated that they had visited the school, and found everything most satisfactory. Accounts amounting to £6 10s were passed for payment.
Messrs Bing and Thomas were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month of September. ,
