> . The usual monthly meeting of the ■ «<We Hoard was held last night. Ireseat : .Messrs Harris (chair), Flynn, Marshall,, White and M'Carthy. The Treasurer reported the receipts since last meeting to have been 41470, Is 3d. and the expenditure for same period was £461 11s, leaving a credit balance of £8 10s 3d. The credit on the- general account was £96. The building account showed a debit balance of £lB, Before proceeding with any business, the Chairman moved that a letter of condolence be sent to the widow of the late James Kerr. Mr Flynn seconded. The other members having spoken in support, the resolution Was carried. Mr Marshall moved that nominations for the vacant seat be due on Monday, 16th, and, if necessary, the Secretary carry out the election. Letter from Blackball Committee forwarding resignation of Mr Harrison as head-teacher. The Chairman explained that he had instructed the Secretary to call for applications for the position. The Chairman’s action was endorsed. From Miss Smith, of Blackball, forwarding, owing to ill-health, her resignation as pupil teacher at the Blackball School. Resignation accepted. Letter from Mr Joseph Scott, offering hhe house at present occupied Mr Hardison at Blackball for sale for £l2O. Received,
' Mr White thought that the Board should buy a house for the teacher at Blackball, and an expert sent up to report on the place. The Board would «ave £ls per annum. Mri Kettle moved that a committee 'consisting of, the Chairman, Messrs. M'Carthy and White have power to purchase if thought desirable. Mr. Marshall thought that it would be a good investment. It would mean a saving of £ls per annum. In eight years the amount would be saved. The resolution was then carried. < From Mr JLord, stating that the Cobden •school was nearly completed. It would he necessary to fence and drain the ground, and 100 loads of gravel would be required. The total cost would be £6O. Letter from A. Miller, Moana, offering to rent the empty schoolhouse at 2s per week. Letter from Miss Stratford, asking permission to use-the old schoolroom for religious purposes. Mr. Kettle moved that both letters be ■ referred to the provisional committee for report.—-Carried. Prom Blackball Committee, stating that the estimated cost of drainage was £l2. Mr. Kettle moved that the Committee bo informed that the Board is agreeable to pay £l2 if the Committee call for tenders and see work carried out.—Carried. HEAD TEACHES, BLACKBALL SCHOOL.
The following applications were re j ceived:— '
A. J. Wickes (Paroa) ... D2 A. Douglas (Capleston) ... D 1 D. Todd (Canterbury) ... D2 W. Jamieson (Wellington) D 4 E. Cowles (Memjigs) ... E 4 Mr. Kettle moved that Mr. Wickes’ name be forwarded on to the committee. Mr, Harris seconded. Mr. M'Carthy moved as an amendment that the whole of the names be forwarded. Mr. White seconded. Mr Kettle thought that it was best to send on Mr Wickes’ application. He was sure to get it in the long run. They did not want a repition of the Ahaura school farce. Mr White said the two cases were quite different. The Ahaura case was one in which a local teacher had’ applied for the position, his term in the school having expired. " He was in favor of all the names being forwarded to the Committee. '
A division was taken and resulted:— . For the amendment—M’Carthy, Finn, and White.
* Against the amendment—The Chairman, Marshall, and Kettle. The Chairman gave his casting vote •gainst the amendment. Th,e resolution was then put and carried on the casting vote of the Chairman.' The following were the applications received for— BIACKBAXX ASSISTANT TEACHEE. J. Crowley (Poerua) ... I) M. M’Donnell (Moonlight E 4 E. Algie (Wellington) ... E 4 E, Moore (Nobles) partial D (and has passed the Civii Service.) M. M’Carthy (Inangahua) M, Beresford (Te Kinga) E 4 The two latter were struck out. The former having no. certificate and the latter having been removed four months ago- i Mr Kettle moved that M’Donnell application be forwarded to the committee for recommendation. Mr Marshall in seconding thought Miss M’Dowell was the best one for the position. Prom the lortj time in the employment of the Board she was entitled to the position. Mr White moved as an amendment that the five applications be forwarded No seconder. The'Chairman then moved that Misses Crowley. M’Donnell, > and Moore’s names be sent to the Committee for recom mendation. There being ho seconder to the ammendments the resplution was carried.
