Suicide.
CnittsTCHUßcii, Aug 25. Fred Hopkins, one of tho oldest master butchers in Christchurch, shot himself with a revolver last night in bed in his own house. Deceased had been a great sufferer for many years and was bedridden latterly. Fatal Tram Car Accident. * Dpnbdin, Aug. 25. Hugh M'Diarmid, 21 years of age was killed in George street on Saturday evening. It has become a practice with hundreds of people on Saturday nights to walk on the roadway instead of the pavement.
M'Diarmid and a friend were doing this when the tram car was going down hill past the Octagan. The driver gave a warning whistle and the friend stepped oil the rails, but for some unknown reason deceased did not do so. He was struck by one of the horses and one of wheels went over his chest crushing it fatally.
