SURVEY OF NEW ZEALAND COASTS.
A rc-survey of the coasts of New Zealand is among the matters to be dealt with by the ships of the Australian squadron, and H.M.S. Mildura left Bydney on 24th July to commence operations. In December last his Excellency the Governor informed the Secretary of State for the Colonies of the portions of the coasts which Ministers consider should bo first surveyed, the places being named as follows :—(1) The east coast of the North Island, from Cape Kidnappers to Cape Palliscr; (2i Portland Island to East Capo, especially that portion between Table Foreland and Gisborne ; (3i Bay of Plenty, particularly that portion between Tauranga Harbour and Tower Point, where several rocks have been reported, but not definitely placed ; (4) a small portion of the coast of Coromandel Harbor ; (5) west coast of North Island, from Capo Maria Van Deimen to Manukau Harbour. In the South Island—(l) Cascade Point to Farewell Spit, especially between Kohurangi Point and Greymouth ; (2) a small portion of the coast on each side rf the French Pass ; (3) Antipodes Islands and Bounty Islands have never been surveyed. The sketch survey made by the late Coptain Fairchild is declared to be alioget-her erroneous.
