The Yukon liner Islander struck an iceberg near Juinean Alaska within a mile of the shore in perfectly calm weather. She sank in twenty-live minutes.
Sixty-five passengers were drowned and one hundred and seven saved.
A million dollars in gold wont dowi with the vessel. Received this day at 2.42 a.m.
Nkw York, Aug. 20. The iceberg which the Islander struck upon was barely risible on the surface. Many victims wore asleep.
The impact jammed the stateroom doors.
Tho stewards burst them open with axes.
The passengers rushed the six boats disregarding the women and pushed off despite the officers efforts to stop them, aud threats tp use axes. Several were drowned trying to secure their gold.
