SENSATIONAL ROBBERY CASE
Tram Full of Passengers “Stuck Up”
[per press association —copyright]
Melbourne, August 18. One of the most sensational sticking up cases in the annals of the Colony occurred early this morning on the tram line between Auburn and Hawthorn.
About one o'clock the driver of the last horse tram from the city was confronted by a masked man, who presented a revolver at his head. As soon as he stopped three others, masked, and armed, jumped on and one stationed himself in front, the other near the door of the car, while a third threatened to shoot if the driver resisted or made a move. They relieved seven men aboard of all their money, ranging from over .£l3 to a few shillings and jewellery. They also took the driver’s box, containing over £2, and a quantity of tickets.
One of the passengers who attempted to resist was thrown on the floor and a revolver so forcibly presented between his eyes that it inflicted a nasty wound. The scheme was well planned. It was a sparsely populated part of the line and was carried out in a few minutes.
A large force of police was scouring the district within a short interval, but so far fruitlessly.
Melbourne, August 19.
The tram robbers are supposed to belong to a gang who recently committed a number of railway burglaries. They returned to passengers their silver watches.
