At a meeting of the Waipuna Gold Dredging Company last night the resolutions (previously published) were unanimously agreed to. A further meeting will be held on August 31st to confirm the resolutions.

Word has been received in Hokitika that the Jane Douglas though still stranded at Okura, is in a safe position from the sea. We understand that Mr Duncan the Hokitika agent, is negotiating with the Anchor Line Company to send a steamer down to assist in launching the vessel.
A new branch of technical instruction has been brought into operation in Southland. The Education Board is having the elder girls in the Invercargill schools taught laundry work. The results so far have been exceedingly satisfactory, and it is probable that the system will be extended to the larger schools in other parts of Souihland.

In addition to the £IOO,OOO borrowed from the A.M.P. Society by the Government, it is said that the Government recently borrowed £25,000 from the Citizens Life office. The home for inebriates which has been established in the Otago district is to be opened shortly. Last year £SOOO were placed upon the Estimates for this purpose but this session a larger vote will probably be asked for, and another home is to be established in the North Island.

The Westport Harbor Board are considering the advisability of purchasing an up-to-date boring plant, and going in for systematic coal-prospecting. The Westport Press are anxious about the greatly diminished depth on the Buller bar, and suggest that up-to’date sand pumps be tried upon the bar. The report of Dr Mason, Chief Health Officer, on the sanitary condition of Blenheim has been sent in to the municipal authorities, and has given satisfaction to the Mayor and Councillors of the borough.
Instructions have been issued to the various Health Officers of the colony to enquire into the incidence of cancer in the colony, with special reference to its occurrence among the Maori population. This is following a course adopted in other countries.

The directors of the Bruce Woollen Company have again rejected all the tenders for rebuilding the works. The Woodville Examiner states that Mrs Monk of Maharahara, who was severely burned about throe weeks ago, while so bravely and devotedly saving her little children from the burning house, succumbed to her injuries on the Ist inat. Although the lady received the best medical advice, care and attention, the dooters had little hope of her recovery owing to her serious injuries and shook to the system.
