GRADUATED LAND TAX.

Apparently the proposal to increase taxation was only abandoned at the last moment. Our Parliamentary correspondent this morning wires us that the Cabinet only decided late yesterday to abandon the proposal to increase the graduated Land Tax, which the Premier suggested in order to recoup the £25,000 which will be lost from the revenue should the Mortgage Tax be reduced. It was felt* so those usually well informed in political circles say, that it would be impolitic just now to put a tax on land, the effect of which must further incense thefarmers and stir up strife. Continuing our special says:—“ On the whole my forecast of the financial outlook and Budget proposals was a little wide of the mark.” The New Zealand Times pronounces the budget as ‘ safe, respectable and pleasant. The country is simply to let well alone by going on the same as last year.”
