DUTY ON “GOLD” PLUSH.

[ODB PARLIAMENTARY REPORTER]

Wellington This Day.

Mr Guinness asked this afternoon whether the Government would favorably consided the advisability of repealing the present duty on plush and other textile fabrics used for gold saving. He explained that the articles mentioned were required for the purpose of saving fine gold obtained by sluices and dredges, and as they could not be manufactured in the colony he urged that, like machinery they should be placed on the free list The Commission of Customs pointed out that plush could only be exempted from doty by an alteration in the tariff. He promised that whenever the tariff revision came under consideration he would bring the request under the attention of the Cabinet.
