(pee peess association.) Supreme Court Sittings. Ohbistchdbch, August 14, In the Supreme Court Albert Watkins was found guilty of assault and robbery, and remanded for the report of the probation officer. The jury, after deliberating till a late hour, failed to agree in the case of Alfred Hornby, charged with breaking and entering Wellington, This Day. At the Supreme Court this forenoon Charles Palmer was convicted of the theft of money and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. Alledged Rape. A young man was arrested to-night on the charge of attempted rape on a young woman on Earori road. The offence is alledged to have been accompanied by extreme violence, the victim being now under the care of a doctor, having been brutally beaten. Han Hissing. Blenheim, August 14, Walter Pullman, a young man residing at Croil Bay, Pelorus Sound, is reported missing since the 6th inst. It is stated that the two brothers, Walter and Colin Pullman, were working together in the bush, when a disagreement arose, and latter left work and never returned home. Since that time up to the time of report reaching Havelock, the brother Walter had not been seen. Enquiries failed to trace his whereabouts and Sergeant Mason left Blenheim for Havelock this morning to investigate the matter. Temperance Advocate. Wellington, This Day. J. G. Woolley, who was one of the candidates for the United States Presidency at the last election, and who is a distinguished American lecturer, is speaking in Wellington on Temperance questions under the auspices of the New Zealand Alliance. Capture of a Ghost. Auckland, This Day. The boy, James Lowe aged 15, was captured in Pitt street masquerading as a ghost. A sheath knife was found on him which he said he intended to use for protection. He was charged at the police court with threatening behaviour and remanded. This hoy is believed not to be the original ghost who frightened a good many people recently. Apparently Wreckage. Wellington, This Day. The Marine Department has been informed that the master of the Isabella Anderson reports sighting about a fortnight ago between Gape Campbell and Kaikonra. Something floating which appeared to be wreckage. Evidently a Fire. Wellington, This Day. Insurances in Union Co’s fire are £2,000 —viz, £SOO each in Alliance Office, Liverpool, London and Globe Office, Sun and North British an 4 Mercantile,
The Union Company’s building was insured for £750 in the Royal Exchange. [We have no intimation of the fire itself.—Ed. E.S.]
