* Claim for Damages. : Invercargill, This Day. Philips, a fisherman and plaintiff in an assault case at Bluff, has issued a ;writ for £4OO against Captain Turner of the for damages in the alleged

assault and false imprisonment. The case will lie heard in the Supreme Court in September. Breaking and Entering. Christchurch, Aug. 6. At the Supreme Court Charles Chapman was found guilty of breaking and entering, and sentenced to three months imprisonment. Alexander M’Kellar was acquitted on a charge of forgery. Education Board Election. Dunedin, August 6. The voting for the election of three members of the Education Board resulted in the return of James Sun, (retiring member), Alexander Marshall and Robert Peattie, two ex-school teachers, There were twelve candidates. Seventyone papers were rejected as informal. Farmers’ Union. Ashburton, Auguft 6, A meeting of farmers has been arranged for Saturday next in order te take steps to form a Farmers’ Union. Rating on Unimproved Values. Auckland, August 6. A poll of ratepayers to decide whether or not rating on unimproved values shall be introduced in the City was taken today. The result was as follows For, 763; against, 1697. There was a majority against the proposal in all the wards. Found Dead. Dunedin, August 5.

Benjamin Barrow, was found dead in the snow near Wedderburn. He is supposed to have a wife, two sons and a sister in Dunedin.

Suspected Arson. Wellington, August 6. The Coroner’s jury sat till a late hour to-night hearing evidence in regard to two outbreaks of fire in a house occupied by Rumgay, at Khandhalla. It was insured for £3OO. The evidence indicated that at least one of the fires had been started from the inside of the house. A feature of the affair was that Rumgay had tried to fasten suspicion on a young woman and later on a man.

The jury returned a verdict that both fires were wilfully caused by some person or persons unknown and added a rider expressing sympathy with the woman whose name had been mentioned and stating that she left the Court without a stain on her character. Arbitration Court. Christchurch, August 6.

At the Arbitration Court to-day the Hairdresser and Tobacconists Union asked for £2 10s as minimum wage for Bhra from 830 a.m., and not until 10 p. m. on Saturdays; apprentices, one to four journeymen, wages 6s week, 5s increases each year to fourth year; 10s increases fifth year. His Honour suggested that the Court make award setting forth certain number of hours labour per day, regulation of hours to be left to employers. Mr Judge’s suggestion was virtually accepted and an award will be given before the end of next week. Attempted Suicide. Palmerston North, Aug. 7. . A man named John Stapleton attempted suicide at 8 a.m. this morning by cutting his throat with a razor. The injuries are serious, but not expected to be fatal. Supreme Court. Wellington, This Day. The Chief Justice sentenced Wm. S. Lee to three years’ imprisonment for forging tt Feilding, and admitted Teao Mohi who had committed forgery at Palmerston to . probation for twelve months.
