- o:o - (per press association.) Fire at Nelson. Nelson, This Day. A seven-roomed residence owned and occupied by Vere Bogle was burned to the ground early last evening. A portion of the furniture was saved. The cause is supposed to be a candle left too near a curtain in the children’s bedroom. The house and contents wore both insured. Particulars are not yet available. Death of a Racer. Auckland, This Day. Messrs Nathan and Co. suffered serious' loss yesterday by the death of a recently imported stallion, Fitzsimmons. Halstead made a post mortem, and ascertained the Cause of death due to rupture. Fitzsimmons was a four year old son of tho celebrated St. Simon, purchased in England in May last..
Telegraphists’ Grievance. Wellington, This Day. A meeting of Wellington telegraphists on Saturday night appointed a deputation to wait up upon the Secretary of the Department, and, bring under his notice a grievance as to long hours which operators and cadets now have to work contittj uously without relief. Some times it is said to be seven hours without an interval for meals.
M’Kenzie’s Health. Wellington, This Day. I learn from a private telegram that Sir John M’Kenzie’s health is causing the gravest anxiety to his family. The Newtown Scandal. Wellington, This Day. The Court of Enquiry into the Newton Camp Scandal opened this morning. Wilford appeared as Counsel for several troopers who had grievances but neither he nor the Press representatives were allowed to remain.
