BRITISH TRADE WITH AUSTRALIS.
A writer in Commer.C-ial IntealgShCG produce-" a Statistical table which shows that Great Britain is steadily losing trade with tho older Strjes of the Australian Commonwealth. In 'the fourteen years, 1881-99, the imports from the United Kingdom into New South Wales declined from £11,885,(100 to £8,211,000; the Victorian proportion fell from £8,946,000 to £5,990,000; the South Australian from £2,781,000 to £2,040,000; and the Tasmanian from 659,000 to £501,000, The fall of £3,674,000 shown in the case of New South Wales was coincident with an increase in that State’s general import from £28,737,000 to £25,594,000. Tho explanation offered is that increased shipping facilities arc extending the competition of American and German manufacturers, and that tho British exporters arc not paying sufficient attention to the exact requirements of their Australian customers.
