A STEP TO THREEPENNY TELEGRAMS.
Twelve Distinct Messages over one Wire.
Some important experiments in connection with a new telegraph system which is claimed to considerably cheapen the cost of telegrams, have recently been conducted by the postal engineers betwen London and Glasgow.
The new apparatus is the invention of a French engineer named Mcrcadicr, and by its invention it is possible send 12 seperata messages over one wire at the same time? The system is also capable of being duplexed, by which 21 separate messages can he sent at one time over a single wire. The details of the apparatus arc coiuparatively simple. The wire is attached at either end to 12 shorter wires, leading in one case to 12 sending keys, and in another case to 12 receivers. At the sending end the currents are interrupted by 12 rapidly vibrating metal reeds, each reed vibrating at a different rale of speed. At the receiving end arc 13 telephone receivers, with membranes of different thicknesses, capable of vibrating at a certain rate, but at no other, The different rates of these receivers arc identical with the rates of the reeds at the sending station.
When a message is sent, or when 12 separata messages arc sent, what happens is this : the 12 currents enter the wire, each impressed with a distinct vibration rate. At the receiving station they pass through a micro phonic receiver, which gives them added strength. They arc then discharged through the 12 receivers. As each of these receivers only responds to vibrations of a certain rate, they select each the currents belonging to its own particular message, but are imprevious to all the others. By this means the messages are accurately sorted out and kept distinct.
The experiments in England were fairly successful, but were frequently interrupted by the bad weather. Eventually some parts of the apparatus failed and had to be returned to the inventor in Paris for repairs. On completion of these the experiments will be resumed. As the main cost of telegraphing is in the expense of erecting and mainlining lines, the value of any system which increases the carrying capacity of the present wires cannot be exaggerated. It is claimed for the' present system that it increases the capacity twelvefold. It is some such invention as this that will bring in threepenny tel grams.— Daily Mail.
SANDER & SONS’ EUCALYPTI EXTRACT I —-Under the distinguished patronage of His Majesty the King of Italy, as per corn' munication made by the Minister forfForoign \ffairs, through the Consul-General or Italy at Melbourne, March 14, 1878. Awarded diploma at the Amsterdam Exhibition, 1883Acknowledged by Mdieal Clinics and Universities all over the Globe.
There are imitations of Eucalypti Extract in the market, products of simple distillation, forming crude, resinous oils. In order chat these crude oils may not bo taken for our pursolatile Eucalypti Extract, which is recognise by the Medical Division of the Prussian Goeminent to be of perfectly pure origin, as per uforraation forwarded to us through the Consul at Melbourne, March 2, 1878, we vtate:—-
It is proved by tests made by the Medical Ctinies of the Universities of Bonn and Griefswald (Prussia), and reported to by Dr Schultz Professor of Pharmacology at Bonn, and Professor Dr Mossier, Director of the Medical Olincs at Griefswald, that only products that are saturated with oxygen and freed of acids resinous and other substances adherent to primary distillation, will develop the sanative qualities proper to the plant. All crude oils or so-called Eucalypti Extracts, are to bo classed according to the named authoriii :3, among the turpentines, which are abandoned long since as an internal medicament. Ti ;se crude oil, or so-called Eucalypti Extracts, are discernible: -
1. By their deficiency in pungent oa.i (which our product, the only genuine Euaa lypli Extract, develops most freely throtgo ts surplus oxygon.) 2. By their alcoholic, thin, and mobile appearance, being reduced to specific density through the presence of acids. 3. By their taste, the result of contract ing tendency of resins and tftnats. If these crude oils, or so-calied Eucalypti Extracts, are applied by mistake in cases of croup, bronchitis, dipthoria, internal inflammation, dysentry, etc., the consequences are most appalling. For safety’s sake ask always or Sander and Rons’ Eucalypti Extract.— Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia.—SANDEß A' SONS.
