GOLD SAVING ON OUR BEACHES.
Bonus for Improved Machinery.
[our parliamentary reporter.]
Wellington, July 26,
Messrs Guinness and Colvin, M.H.E’s., together with Mr. Petrie (Greymouth) and Mr. Earnshaw (Wellington) on Tuesday waited on the Minister of Mines with a request that he would consider the advisability of granting a bonus for an invention for a process of saving fine gold in black sand on the West Coast of the South Island.
The deputation urged that Government would be put to no expense if the process did not answer after a thorough test as the bonus would not then be paid. The Hon Mr*M‘Gowan did not appear altogether favorable to the application, as he pointed out that if the patent were a success there would bo a fortune on the invention, which could bo protected by patent rights without any Government bonus.
To this the deputation made answer that a precedent for their application existed in regard to the iron sand industry and flax dressing machinery. The Minister recommended the deputa•tion to put their request In writing, and the reasons they had to advance in support of it. This has been done, and the matter will now have the Cabinet consideration.
