THE DEPORTED FIJI MISSIONARY.
[pee press association.]
Wellington, July 23
The Eev Slade, the missionary whose deportation by Sir George o‘Brien, Governor of Fiji, was threatened, arrived here from Fiji by the Flora. In the course of an interview he stated that a strong feeling existed that the ordinance with reference to inducing the Fijians to favor a change of Government would not be allowed. Their was no necessity for it. The Fijians had no organisation nor inclination to fight. The missionaries have the greatest influence over them in preventing this. The decline of population is due largely to the communal system, which seems to kill ambition. The Europeans in Fiji are in favor of federation with Australia. O'Brien was to leave Fiji on Thursday, and it was improbable that he would return.
