Green Yalley School Destroyed. Dunedin, July 23.

The Green, Valley scboolhouso was completely destroyed by fire with its contents. It is supposed that a fierce gust of wind during the night must have blown out on the floor some live embers from the remains of the fire. The building, furniture, and district library (valued at £1100) were uninsured. The harmonium, used for church purposes, was insured. Death of an Old Resident. Nelson, Jnly 23. Mr Samuel Rowe, a resident of Richmond, died suddenly last night. He was of independent means and shout 70 years of age. He formerly lived in the Wellington district. The verdict was natural causes. Sixtieth Anniversary of Nelson At a largely attended meeting to-night it was resolved to hold a week’s carnival, commencing the Ist February next, in celebration of’the 60fch anniversary of the Nelson settlement. Very strong committees representing the old province were elected. Indignant at a Sentence. Mangawena, July 24. Great indignation is caused here by the imposition of a sentence of six months on an old settler, named J. Gardner, for being drunk and using obscene language. A petition is being signed to protest against the sentence, Gardner is the father of a largo family of children.
