GREY-HOKITIKA RAILWAY EXTENSION.

It is time that the committee formed to advocate the extension of the GreyHokitika railway to Ross, proceeded actively to work, as the time for bringing the matter under the notice of Parliament is rapidly passing away. The session, from all appearance, will be a short one, as there ate no burning questions to occupy the attention of the House, and from the action of the Premier in introducing important policy measures at so early a date, it is evident that he means to force business as rapidly as possible. It is already hinted that the Financial Statement is all but ready, and that the debate will be a short one, when it will bo followed by the Public Works’ Statement. If the committee are not prepared with some evidence as to the desirability, public utility, and financial prospects of the proposed line, then farewell for the present of any hope of railway extension. There is not much cloubt as to the line paying expenses The country ab unds in minerals and timber of the best and most desirable quality, while there are thousands of acres of first-class agricultural and pastoral land equal to any in New Zealand, that are on'y awaiting the means of communication to open up a large area for settlement. The petition in its favor has been largely signed, and the sooner the committee makes up its mind to impress upon its representative the desirability of urgently supporting its prayer, the bettor for the prospects of the proposed line.
