NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Speaking in the House on Thursday, the Premier furnished the following particulars of the now commandant of the New Zealand forces : —Major and Brevet-Colonel iSt. George Chas. Henry had twenty-two years’ full pay service. He was the third on the list of Majors of the Fifth Regiment of Northumberland Fusiliers, being Senior-Major of the Third Battalion. He was made a Brevet-Lieutenant«Colonel on the 6th July, 1899, and Brevet-Colonel on the 14th .March, 1900, and was shown as having commanded the Fourth Corps of Mounted Infantry Africa since 4th April, 1900. He served in the Dongola Expeditionary Force under Sir herbert Kitchener in 1896 i with the Camel Corps, including the engagement at Forket, and operations at Hafir (mentioned in despatches, British medal, and Khedive’s medal, with two clasps), in the operations in 1897 (clasp to Khedive’s medal), in 1898 with the First Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Fifth Regiment), present at the battle of Khart um (mentioned in despatches), and at the operations at Gedaret (mentioned in despatches; Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel, clasp to'-Khedive’s medal); in the operations of 1899 resulting in the final defeat of the Khalifa, in command of the Camel Corps Flying Column, and including the engagements at Abu Aadel and Om Dubreckat. The London Gazette of 16th April, 1901, contained the following Colonel St. George Henry, Northumberland Fusiliers, has repeatedly shown to advantage as a leader of men, and as commanding officer of the Fourth Corps of Mounted Infantry he has done excellent work.” The Gazette also announced that the Order of the Bath had been conferred on Colonel Henry.
