THE GRAND HOTEL FIRE.

Yerdict of the Jury.

Jessie Minns arrested for Arson

(per press association)

Auckland, July 15,

The Coroner, in summing up the Grand Hotel Fire, said that possibly someone was pointed out to Jessie Minns. By her admission she became a principal, and by saving she only read it in a book she withdrew her neck* from the noose. Police enquiries showed that Madame \Vantcr was mistaken as to certain other employees on the promises the night of the fire. Tho jury retired to consider their verdict.

The inquest ro the Grand Hotel fire has concluded. Tho jury returned the following verdict: —“That Leonara, Eva and NinS Johnston came by their death from suffocation and burning in tho tire at the Grand Hotel; that Dora Wallace came by her death from injuries and the shock received in having to jump from tho top storey of the Grand Hotel, a depth of some 30 feet, in consequence of the building being on fire. The jury arc fully of tho opinion that tho fire was not the result of an accident, but a wilful act of Jessie Minns and other person or persons unknown. They arc also of the opinion that the fire escapes provided were totally inadequate. The jury are opinion that the lire brigade acted as promptly as possible after receiving the alarm, and with the appliances at their command did everything that lay in their power; but arc of opinion that more modern appliances should Ik> provided without delay, including electric alarms. Tho jury wish it to be made known to the Minister of Justice that in their opinion it is desirable legislation should be introduced whereby with regard to licensed houses, bearding houses, factories, theatres, and other places of amusement, the question of lire escapes should no longer be decided by a body such as the licensing committee ; but hy the Stipendiary Magistrate alone. In consequence of the verdict the Coroner issned a warrant for the arrest of Jessie Minns. She will be kept in custody until released by a writ of habeas corpus or proceeded against in such a manner as hs Crown shill determine. Tae Coroner pointed out that the verdict of the jury would also cover tho death of Frederick A s res.

In a rider the jury state that the Auckland city council is to be strongly censured for not carrying into qffjct the building byc-law re fire escapes.

SANDER & SONS’ EUCALYPTI EXTRACT- —Under the distinguished patronage of His Majesty the King of Italy, as per communication made by the Minister forfForeign Affairs, through the Consul-General or Italy at Melbourne, March 14, 1878. Awarded diploma at the Amsterdam Exhibition, 1883Acknowledged by Mdical Clinics and Universities all over the Globe.

There are imitations of Eucalypti Extract in the market, products of simple distillation, forming crude, resinous oils. In order that these crude oils may not be taken for our pursolatile Eucalypti Extract, which is recognise by the Medical Division of the Prussian Goernment to be of perfectly pure origin, as per nformation forwarded to us through the Consul at Melbourne, March 2, 1378, wc vtate: —

It is proved by tests made by the Medical Clinics of the Universities of Bonn and Griefswald (Prussia), and reported to by Dr Schultz Professor of Pharmacology at Bonn, and Professor Dr Mossier, Director of the Medical Clines at Griefswald, that only products that are saturated with oxygen and freed of acids resinous and other substances adherent to primary distillation, will develop the sanative qualities proper to the plant. All crude oils or so-called Eucalypti Extracts, are to bo classed according to the named authoriti is, among the turpentines, which are abandoned long since as an internal medicament. Tl ese crude oil, or so-called Eucalypti Extracts, are discernible: -

9 1. By their deficiency in pungent odo (which our product, the only genuine Euoa lypti Extract, develops most freely throrgn ts surplus oxygen.) 2. By their alcoholic, thin, and mobile appearance, being reduced to specific density through the presence of acids. 3. By their taste, the result of contract ing tendency of resins and tanats. If these crude oils, or so-called Eucalypti Extracts, are applied by mistake in eases of croup, bronchitis, dipthoria, internal inflammation, dysentry, etc., the consequences are most appalling. For safety’s sake ask always or Sander and Sons’ Eucalypti Extract.— Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia.—SANDEß & SONS.
