Coming Elections.
Wellington, July 15
Private advice lias been received here with respect to the by-elections to he held on Thursday, to the effect that the Opposition candidate will likely win in botli cases ; that Smith will he returned for Christchurch and Haseldcn for Patea owing to the split in the Liberal vote. Customs officers’ Changes.
The Collector of Customs at Wellington (Mr D. McKcllar) is retiring from the Government service, and is to be succeeded by Mr D. Johnston, of Invercargill. Mr E. Patten, Collector of Customs at Christchurch, is to retire, and Mr J. Mills of Westport to be appointed his sucessor.
