[Pee Pbess Association.] Bad Weather at Napier. Naaieb, This Day. A steady rainfall for the last two days resulted in the accumulation of a vast quantity of storm water in the low lying lands district. Some anxiety was felt for Clive owing to the mouth of the Ngaruroro river being blocked with shingle, but strenuous efforts are being made to effect an opening. The weather now shows signs of breaking and unless it takes another unfavourable turn no serious consequences should result. , The Grand Hotel Fire. Auckland, July 14. The girl Minns on being recalled was asked if she had anything to say, and she replied " I read it out of a book. lam very sorry." The enquiry wai adiourned.
The Invercargill Accident. Inyeecaegill, July 13. Mr and Mrs Sneyd are both, critical. M. Morton has several wounds in the arm and back. A. M'Sporran has a number of deep wounds on his legs. Several others were injured by flying fragments. The fatality was caused by the bursting of a signal rocket fired by Captain M'Gillray of the steamer Invercargill. The Premier has wired his deepest sympathy to the relatives of Mrs Snevd and other sufferers.
At the inquest on the body of Mrs Sneyd, evidence was taken with the view of ascertaining who was responsible for setting up a stand in the busiest part of the town to discharge fireworks from, and how it came about that a ship's danger signal containing high explosives was fired. The inquest was adjourned until Tuesday. The sufferers now in the hospital are doing fairly well. Several other cases of injuries are reported. Illegal Operation. Cheistchubch, July 13. Walter Brewer and Nellie Brewer were charged at the Police Court this forenoon with unlawfully using certain instruments. Bertha Light was remanded after the girl's evidence had been taken at the hospital, Obituary John Gannaway, a well-known stevedore, and formerly one of the shore managers of the old Panama Company died last night. Customs Retirement. Wellington, July 14. It is reported that D. McKellar, Collector of Customs at Wellington, is retiring from the Government servioe, and that he will be succeeded by Johnston, of Invercargill. Patten, Collector at Christchurch, also retires, being suoceeded by Mills, of Westport.
Fatal Railway Accidents. The man Oharks Pressman, injured by a railway Engine on Friday at the crossing, died in the hospital. Cheistchurch, July 13.
The lad Wane, who met with an accident orfthe train to-day died at the hospital in the afternoon. Found Dead.
Wm. Hazell, a farmer of South Hillend, about 52 years of age was found dead in a ditch this morning, Suicide. Colin Boss, a single man, aged 35, for years employed by Messrs Massey and Co, sawmillers, hung himself at Mabel Bush on Friday. A Correction. The man Pressman who was yesterday reported to bo dead still lingers at the hospital, though in a low state. Obituary. New Plymouth This Day. Fredk. Alonzo Carrington aged 93. He arrived here in 1841 to survey the settlement and fixed the site for New Plymouth, aod returned to England but came back in 1857 and became engineering surveyor for Taranaki from 1869 to 1876 and sat in House of Representatives. Latterly great age to'.d on him and he passed away in his sleep.
