THE CORONATION OATH.

Dunedin, July 11. A largely attended public meeting of protestants was held in the Choral Hall last night. The Eev James Gibb moved that this meeting protest against any alteration being made in the form of the Coronation Oath and the declaration of the Sovereigns of Great Britain, on the grounds tliat by the act of settlement it is decreed that the sovereigns of those realm shall be of Protestant faith, that the aggressive claims and attitude of the Homan Catholic Church arc such that it is necessary that there shall be no relaxation of the safeguards which ensured the continuance of the Protestants succession, that as the Eoman Catholic doctrine of mental reservation permits oaths to be taken in other than their generally accepted meaning, it is incumbent on the Sovereign to make his declaration in terms that are pot capable of being taken in any other than their ordinary and obvious meaning, to declare his adhesion to he Protestant faith in terms that cannot bo misunderstood. The resolution was seconded by the Rev. Brooke (Wcslyan) and carried enthusiastically, as also was the following, proposed by C. Watt, seconded by the Rev Wdson, 11 This meeting; reeognising the gravity of the present crisis, emphatically protests against any modifications! : the Coronation Oath without a plebiscite of the electors of Australasia being first taken, and that a copy of resolution be forwarded to the Governor.”
