THE RETURNING TROOPS
A public meeting was held at the Bucks Head Hotel at Brunner last evening to consider the best means of giving the troopers who are expected back from South Africa in a few days a loyal reception. The Mayor who occupied the chair explained that Troopers Smith nnd Small who had left Brunner sixteen months ago to represent New Zealand in the fight against the Boers were expected back and as they had risked their lives in defence of the British Empire, he felt sure ihat the residents would roll up in strong force and give them a most enthusiastic and cordial welcome homo. Bosolved that an executive eommittoe be appointed consisting of the Mayor, the business people, the Volunteers and the Miners Union to carry out the following programme. That the Volunteers wiib band meet thorn at the Railway Station and escort them to the Hall where the Mayor on behalf of the residents will accord them a welcome home and that a public social and dance be held in the evening in their honor. The committee meet ...t the Bucks Head Hotel this evening at 7 o'clock to make the necessary arrangements.
