The concert and organ recital, to be given in the Catholic Schoolroom at Brunnerton on Saturday evening, 'promises to be a great success. Songs illustrated by lime light views will be given, and also, an exhibition of legerdemain. The new organ, which has recently been obtained for the Church will be played for the first time; that in itself is sufficient to draw a crowded house.

On our third page appears an adver- | tisement drawing attention to a number of seasonable specialties for the cold weather we have recently been experiencing. Lucky indeed is he who can go about and escape the usual toll in the form of toothache, chilblains, rough and cracked hands, to say nothing of |the troublesome cough and rheumatic twinge every now and again. Sufferers therefore should read and inwardly digest the aforesaid advertisement as therein may appear£something which, from the missing friends column "may be'to their advantage.**

For some considerable time past a gymnasium class has been in existence at the Greymouth State School. The pupils having obtained a considerable degree of efficiency, it was decided to invite a number of friends and acquaintances to an exhibition which was given in the gymnasium last evening, quite a large gathering assembling. The lads, who had evidently been well trained, went through a number of exercises at the conclusion of which refreshments were handed round. Much credit was accorded to Messrs Wise and Dixon for their careful training, and to Mrs Waiuwright, Mrs Jackson and Miss Dixon lor the refreshments provided. A very rare aerial phenomenon (says tho Herald) was witnessed at Black's Point about 3 o'clock on Friday afternoon last, which caused no little consternation among tho younger portion of that usually peaceful locality. Two balls of fire, of oblong shape, and some distance apart, shot across the sky, at not a very great distance, and accompanied by some noiS3. The courso of the aerialites seemed to be in the direction of the Point, hence the alarm of tho residents. The visitors however went out of sight over the hill tops. Occurrences of a similar nature have often witnessed at night, but tho large size and brilliancy, in broad daylight, of that on Friday last is worthy ot being recorded. Mr K. McKenzie's Miner's Right Fee Reduction Bill provides for the reduction of the fee to ss.

We understand that the Jamioson's Reward Gold Dredging Company has been successfully floated. The contributing shares (7500) being over subscribed. The claim is exceptionally well situated in Nelson Creek adjoining the Pactolus Company's property. Tho brokers Messrs Wickes and Kingswell are U |be congratulated on the excellent share list they succeeded in obtaining.

At the Magistrate's Court at Wcstport recently, in connection with a matter that came incidentally before him, MiHawkins; S.M., spoke strongly in favour of a very much wider discretion being given to Magistrates in dealing with ordinary criminal cases. We quite agree with Mr Hawkins in his remarks. In ordinary cases of theft of sums of money beyond a certain amount, with which at present the Magistrate cannot deal, a large expense and an unnecessary stigma caused by lengthy legal paraphernalia might in cases of first offenders with good reputations be avoided by allowing the Magistrates in their common sense way to deal definitely in the first instance with such cases.

The survey, now being undertaken by the Government, for the railway line between Beefton and the Inangahua Junction is being proceeded with vigorously from the Reefton end In conneotion with this line it is reported that a proposal will be made to the Consolidated Goldfields Company to extend the lino up the Inangahua river, and from Reefton to the Globe mine subject to certain payments of interest on cost. Should the Govern-' ment and Company come to terms respecting this proposal the question of the railway site to Reefton will be settled, and by the force of circumstances the most convenient and in every way the best position for the station will bo placed beyoud doubt. A Riverina farmer has by accident found an economical improvement in wheat growing. Instead of painfully ploughing, hurrowing, and drilling the wheat in, he found a better result from wheat sown on the surface and lightly ploughed in with the first turn and then neglected.
