ARRIVAL OF THE MAIL STEAMER.

Wellington, July 9
Tho mail agent reports that the Ventura arrived at 'Frisco a day late in consequence of a damaged cylinder. Tho mails were despatched by train the samo clay in time to connect with the Campania, which was specially delayed for the New Zealand mails. The train broke down between Chicago and New York, aud the Campania could not wait on acoount of the tide, consequently there was a further delay at New York of three days. The Sonoma's voyago to Auckland occupied 18 days 1 hour and 57 minutes. - Owing to a strike among the iron workers in San Francisco the repairs required by the Sonoma wore not completed and the high pressure cylinder of the port engine is still in a bad condition. Tho damage will if possible ba repaired in Sydney. This defect, in addition to 17 hours' stay in Honolulu, and strong south west winds during the latter part of the trip.
There were no cases of plague at 'Frisco or Honolulu when the Sonoma left. The vessels are expected to roach Wellington to morrow afternoon. -
