GOLD DREDGING.
Work on the No Town dredge is proceeding very slowly. The pontoon is not yet completed. The boiler and a quantity of machinery is on the ground. The Greymouth Lagoon Company, whose head-quarters are iu Sydney, have finally taken over two dredging properties in Snowy and Blackwater Creeks respectively. One area secured is the freehold property of Mr John Fhelan at Snowy, and the other is a claim hitherto known as Waimaunga Company's and held by Mr A. Doig of Blackwater.* 1 As the Lagoon Company has a capital, largely paid up, of £24,000 it is intended to put a dredge on each claim. The Waimaunga claim adjoins the Blackwater Company's property, of which high hopes are entertained. Messrs Cutten Bros are the engineers to the Company and Mr T. E. Coates the local representative. The boring was carried out by parties under the respective supervision of Mr Lichfield and Mr Appleton. • v rj' The Secretary of the Three-mile-Green-stone Gold Dredging Company reported that on Monday the dredge bad stopped owing to a breakage in the winch starting valve. She has just struck solid ground, but there was no wash up last week. Some of the shareholders in the Beefton United Dredging Company whose claim is situated at Boss are clamering to have the Company wound up. There are other shareholders however, who are otherwise inclined. The company has over JG2OOO called up. The ground has been prospected and satisfactory results obtained. Some of the shareholders are anxious to know the reasons why steps are not being taken to proceed with the building of pontoons etc.
On Saturday the Island Creek drer'ge struck one end of the lead and washed the mats for 20 hours' work was 6ozs Bdwts. It will be some time yet before the dredge will be on the full breadth of the lead, and at present only touches it for a few hours on each third shift. The indications are improving, and when bottom is reached splendid returns should be got. The depth at present is ten to twelve feet.
