Yiotoria College.
■ Wellington, June 25. Students of Victoria College who passed the recent degree examinations, received their diplomas this afternoon. At the graduation ceremony held in the hall of the Technical School the undergraduates were present in full force and added variety to the proceedings by performances on a big drum, mouth organ and similar discordant instruments. Sir Jas. Hector presided and there was a large gathering of University prof essors and the public.
A Great Bazaar. Wellington, June 26. The Bazaar in aid of the Victoria Home for Inourables opened by the Duchess of Cornwall resulted in JE3.200 being taken. It la stated that a Government subsidy of twenty-four shillings in the £ will be forthcoming.
Arrivals and Departures. ■Wellington, June 25. During the month of May 2157 persons arrived in the colony; as against 841 in the same month last year. The depar- ' tures were 1575 as against 1076 last year Libel Actions. Wellington, Juno 26. ' The Carterton libel oases of Hornsby v. Moriarty v. Hornsby were mentioned in the District Court at Masterton this morning. Counsel for Hornsby applied for an adjournment on the ground ■•y privilege. Oddfellows Conference. Wellington, This Day.
The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows Conference opened this morning. John Smith, of Wellington, was chosen presi* dent andM'Leod, of Auckland, secretary. The business of the Conference is to consider a motion moved by M'Leod in favor of the erection of a movable committee and board of directors. The debate on the proposal is still pending. The Oddfellows Conference adopted a resolution in favor of a moveable committee and board of directors.
Fatal Shooting Accident.
Eltham, This Day.
A fatal shooting accident occurred at Kawhitiroa yesterday. A young man named Waller, carrying a gun which accidentally discharged, the contents entering his throat.
Educational Matters. Wellington This Day.
A memorandum from the North Canterbury Women Teachers association was submitted to the Teachers Salaries Commission to-day making a strong appeal for principle of equal pay for equal work. It changes the assertion that women are not physically or mentally capable of teaohing higher standards and states that in North Canterbury it has been the practice in mixed schools to assign any standard to any woman teacher.
