GREYMOUTH ADDRESS TO THE YORKS.
One of the prettiest pieces of work we have witnessed for a long time is the address and its case to be presented to His Royal Highness, the Duke of Cornwall and York, from the inhabitants of Greymouth and the Grey District, by His Worship the Mayor, A. Mathieson, Esq., and which reflects the greatest credit on all concerned. The case and the address were designed by the Town Clerk, Mr Lord, and the whole production is a beautiful piece of artistic work. The case is composed of 12 pieces of New Zealand woods, bound with silver buckle hoops, the ends being surmounted with silver sliding crowns. The woodwork was executed by Mr Scbaef and the silver ornamentation by Mr Shilton. The case bears a plate with the following inscription engraved by Mr Shilton:— “Address to their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York from His Majesty’s loyal subjects in Greymouth and Grey District, New Zealand. June, 1901.” The address is a picture, the illumination which is beautifully executed by Mr E, Warnes is surrounded by a border of white roses (the emblem of the House of York) thistles and shamrocks most artistically painted in oil colours by Miss Gleeson. Altogether the presentation is a unique one, and worthy of the inhabitants of this district. The following is the address : “To His Royal Highness, George, Frederick, Earnest, Albert, Duke of Cornwall and York, Knight of the most noble order of the _ Garter, Knight of the most ancient and noble order of the Thistle. Knight of the most illustrious order of Saint Patrick, etc, etc.
May it please Your Royal Highness, “We, Andrew Matheson, Mayor, of the Town of Greymouth, New Zealand, William' McKechnie, Chairman of the County of Grey, and William Robert Kettle, Chairman of the Greymouth Harbor Board, on behalf of the citizens and inhabitants of the District, thereby convey to you, with one full voice, our loyalty to His Majesty tjxe King. We feel that the link your Boyal Highness has forged by opening the first Parliament of the Australian Commonwealth, will ultimately become the endless chain that shall bind together every State in our Glorious Empire." It is our desire to mark the occasion of your Boyal visit, and that of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall and York, in a permanent manner. We therefore pray you to kindly give Your Royal Assent to the erection of a large cluster of incandescent lamps in the town of Greymouth, to be called “ The York Light.” The base of the structure to be of marble suitably inscribed, in commemoration of Your Royal Highnesses important mission to Australia and New Zealand, Anno Domini, 1901. We have the honor to be, Your Royal Highnesses mopt humble and obedient servants. “ A. Matheson, Mayor. “ W. M’Kechnib, County Chairman, “W. R. Kettle, Chairman Haber “ Board." Greymouth, June, 1901.
