WAIMEA-STAFFORD NOTES.
(OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) >
Hydraulic sluicing on a large scale is shortly to be started here. A syndicate —mostly Greymonth people—having purchased Toker Brothers mining property and known as Beale’s Terrace, Tokers and Killery’s paddocks. The pipes for conveying the water from the Government Race to the claim are now being made by Mr W. Heinz of Hokitika As the Government have guaranteed the syndicate 16 heads of water daily, a party, of men under Mr I). M’Connon start next week in order to put the Government water-race in proper repair, Loch’s Syndicate—This syndicate like many of the, dredging companies has now gone into liquidation. The tunnel driven from the Flowery Creek drainage into the freehold for a distance of 100 feet proved a rank duffer. Wheel of Fortune—A mining expert from England has for the past few weeks been prospecting this claim, meeting with splendid prospects. It is reported that the expert intends having a different plant to the present one to work the claim.
Lawyers’ Paradise—At present owing to the water not yet being in from the Wainninhini, there is only one claim at work, Hanahan and Party. Romas and Party and Queen and Party are ready to start sluicing, but will probably have to wait’six months before the water is in.
Toker and Party’s six acre claim adjoining Hanrahan’s was “jumped” on Wednesday last by Jereimiah O’Sullivan from Kumara. The cancellation suit will be heard at Stafford on the 20th inst. Great interest is being taken in the case, the plaintiff is likely to have a lively time of it. Pbwcry Creek Drainage Tunnel— This drainage race is now within 150 ft. of being finished and so far no gold has as yet been struck. From present appearances the tunnel is likely to prove a “ white elephant.” Stafford-Waimea Creek Dredge.—The machinery for this dredge is now being carted on the ground by Mr J. Cameron. So far only three men are employed doing a little clearing. The ground to be worked by this dredge was well prospected.
