The Charleston Libel Case.
McHerron v Kittson charged with criminal libel in the Charleston Herald, came before the District Court to-day. Hannan for defence raised the point that there was no such offence in Hew Zealand as criminal libel since the passing of the Criminal Code Act. If it existed under the English statute previously, it was impliedly repealed by the Criminal Code. Judge Ward adjourned the case until the decision of the Court of Appeal on the point raised by the Chief Justice, in the ’‘Nation” case Wellington was decided.
