At the inquest on MaryHodkins Atkinson, formerly known as Mrs Worthington and Plunkett, evidence showed that death was caused bv asphyxia drowning. A verdict of suicide by drowning while temporarily insane was returned. Royal Visit, Wellington, This Day. Arrangements have been completed by the Telegraph Department for the running of Telegraph wire to the Auckland wharf by which the Duchess of Cornwall will communicate to the colony announcing the arrival of the Ducal Parly, and flags are to bo hoisted on receipt at all public buildings and schools. Drowning Case. Napier, June 8. News was received in tewn to-night cf the drowning at Upper Mohaka of a young man named Lamb. No particulars are to hand, but it is conjectured that deceased, who had only recently returned from Australia, and who was working on Potter Bros’ run, was attempting to cross the river and not knowing the river was carried off his feet. Lamb was 29 years of age and son of the late R. Lamb, architect of this town. Arbitration Court. Dunedin, June 7. The Arbitration Court sat to-night to conclude the hearing of evidence anti addresses on both sides in the MetalWorkers Assistants’ dispute. Justice Cooper announced that the matter would be considered in combination with the .boiler makers’ dispute and the decision given.

The Review at Christchurch. The offer of increased pay to men attending the Eoyal review at Christchurch has boon submitted to the Volunteers, with the result that only 165 names were received from the rifle battalions, or five mere than previously offered. Of these over 40 are recruits, as only one company offered the minimum strength of 40 and that company has not yet received belts. None of the infantry companies will .go to Christchurch. Most of the men say that they absolutely cannot afford the time. , Accidental Death. A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest on William Howie, killed by the cap.-iziog of a drag in a fog t Lookout Point. Writ of Habeas Corpus. Judgement- was given by the Chief Justice in Chambers to-day in a writ of Habeas Corpus. In this ease the mother of a female illegitimate child applied to get the child from the father, in whose custody it had boon for three years. The evidence went to show that the child was well looked after and happy. Sir Robert Stout was of the opinion that the in terests of the child had to be first con" sidered, and seeing that it was being pro' 'perly looked after he refused to -mak 9 order.
