London, June 9. Lieut-Col Scobell surprised a laager of 300 Boers at Diapontein and captured 20 of the Boers with 160 horses and a quantity of Jamestown loot. By a collision on the Pietersburg railway line, nine soldiers were killed and several injured. Hon Mr Brodrick stated that there are 81 soldiers in convict prisons guilty of sleeping at their posts and causing loss of lives and supplies, Hoii Mr Brodrick, in the House of Commons announced that Lord Kitchener was free to receive and transmit any Boer proposals for peace, but neither Kitchener nor the Govermpent would discuss the question of independence. He was glad to say that the statement that two Britishers were shot at Ylakfontein (or not revealing the working of the guns was unfounded, and Lord Kitchener was enquiring into the origin of the story, Lieut-Col. Benson, marching on Carolina, aaptnred 40 Boers and drove many ' into the hands of the other columns. When tracked to the ravines, the Boers •imply surrender. Captain Neill (of the New Zealand Mounteds) has sailed for England.
