THE ROYAL VISIT.

[by electric telegraph—copyright.]

[per press association.]

Wellington, This Day.

The Education Department has begun the distribution of copper medals to State School children in tho Colony to commemorate the Eoyal Visit. The medal is a little larger than a shilling. On the front is a representation of the Eoyal yacht with the inscription ''H.M.S. Ophir in which Boyal Highnesses came to New Zealand, June 1901." On the back are the words "Children's souvenir of the visit of the Duke and Duehess of Cornwall to New Zealand." 150,000 medals have been struck.

Another financial difficulty has arisen over the street decoration. The decoration committee applied to the reception committee for another £2OO, but that body has already incurred liabilities to the extent of £1,400, and had only £1,200 at its disposal. The committee resolved to vote £IOO conditionally on it being subscribed by the public, and a further canvas is to be made. It is stated that unless further subscriptions are made the work will have to be stopped. Wellington, This Day. The Government intends to present the Duchess of York and Cornwall while at Eotorua with an album of New Zealand ferns, in a cover of inlaid New Zealand, bound in purple marocco with an inscribed gold plate. The whole will be enclosed in a cagkot of indigenous woods, mounted on carved legs with a totaraknot on which the Duke of York's arms will be inscribed.
