GREY BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Town Hall last night, all members present. Mr Thomas moved that the Mayor, Crs. Sheedy, Bignell, Petrie and the mover be appointed a sub-committee to consider re-naming streets. Carried
Letter from Mr Southeran asking for lease of Reserve No. 186. Resolved that all sections on Borough reserves be offered by tender.
Application by Railway Department for reduction in gas for large lamps was referred to Gas Committee to report upon.
From Borough Council, Brunner, declining to join in erection of abbatoirs. Invitation to the Mayor to attend the York reception was read. Moved by Mr M'Lean seconded by Mr Steer that the Mayor represent the town.—Carried.
From the Charitable Aid Board relative to levy which this year for the town amounted to £746 Is Bd. «
The Mayor explained that this was a rise of £2OO. He said the Hokitika Borough was prepared to fight the Westland County owing to that body not taking into account mining property. The Grey Connty was acting in exactly in the same manner.
Mr Thomas moved that another test case be taken. Mr Bignell seconded; Messrs Guinness and Kitchingham to appear for the Borough, Mr Hannan being the County solicitor, and that Mr Joyce be appointed assessor. From Mary Known, objecting to the Chinese dead being deposited in the old brewery building. All members spoke strongly upon the matter, and it was finally agreed to that the Chinese be informed that they will not be allowed to store the bodies in the old brewery. That they must put up temporary shed in cemetery for storage, and when bodies arc removed the building to be burned,— * Carried.
The Works’ Committee reported as follows :
(1) “With regard to Hospital Creek sower,’we find that it is only a storm water channel at present and there is no nuisance; we cannot recommend it owing to the groat cost of construction. (2.) “We recommend High Street from the Recreation Hotel to the Hospital to be formed to the full width on the west side, and gravelled for 6 feet on the same side.
(3.) “We recommend Shakespeare Street footpath from Thomson Street to Sawyers Creek to he done by day labor at the same time as the sower is laid.
(4) ‘‘We recommend that two more drays should be hired by the Borough at 16s per day worked, and 8s per half-days , > —for man, horse, and dray.” The report as a whole was adopted.
