WRECK OF A SCHOONER AND CUTTER.
(per press association) Invercargill, May 29. On Sunday last the schooner Cavalier, owned and sailed by Mr Rodeiique of Riverton, was in Mason Bay, west side of Stewart Island, making a trip to bring back mutton birders, when a heavy gale cams on and in attempting to run for hhelter under Native Island the jib was carried away. This made her practically unmanageable and in passing through a narrow channel she struck sank. Roderiquo and crew of two got ashore safe in the dingy and spent a miserable night under the upturned boat. Next dav they made Charlton’s homestead and thence walked across to Patersons Inlet on Tuesday, catching the mail steamer today and returning to the Bluff.
The Maoris on tho islands are likely to be suffering considerable hardships as the weather has been almost unprecedentedly inclement for five weeks. The Cavalier was valued at J-500, and was not insured.
The cotter Rapid drove from anchors in the same gale and went to pieces in Henrietta Bay, Ruapeke. She was owned by Mr Newton, a resident on the island. It is not known what stops will be taken to bring back the mutton birders.
