Remounts for Africa.' Wellington, May 22. Colonel Hunt and Capt. NuthaU, who are purchasing remounts for South Afrcca have returned from a visit to the West Coast of this Island, having purchased 240 horses. They go on to Christchurch, afterwards returning to Hawkes Bay and Auckland. The horses will bo shipped by the Cornwall, 750 being forwarded.

Fashionable Wedding

A wedding which created considerable interest in Jewish circles took place today at the Synagogue, when Lsah, second daughter of Rabbi Vans tavern, was married to Mr Jacob Harris. The ceremony was performed by the bride's father, and there was a very large attendance of their co-religionists and others,

Teachers' Salaries Commission. Inveecarcill, May 22. In opening the Teachers' Salaries Commission here the Chairman said there seemed to be a slight misapprehension as to the effect of the scale of salaries submitted by Mr Hogben, namely that it would involve an expenditure of £5355 beyond the £4 capitation. As the proposal involved a reduction in staffing there would be a saving of £4405, so that the increased expenditure in raising the salaries to the highest scale in the colony would be £950.

Returned From Melbourne Wellington, May 22. The Monowai arrived to-night from Sydney having on Board the military force which represented the Colony at the demonstration in Melbourne during the Eoyal visit.

Mr Ward and a number of other visitors to the celebrations were also on board. Tho contingent will be paraded to-morrow and lrurch throogh the streets. Capt. Cosgrove, of the Sixth Contingent was a passenger and also Capt Bengley, an Imperial officer, who takes up a post in the Defence Department,

The Baptist Church. Nelson, This Day.

The Jubilee cf tho Nelson Baptist Church (the first in New Zealand) was celebrated last evening by a public meeting and cofLe supper. There was a large and representative attendance. Congratulatory addresses were delivered by the Clergy of the various denominations. The Church was shown to be in a prosperous condition. Celebrations will be continued in November, when the Jubilee Conference of New Zealand Churches will ba held in Nelson. .-

The annual examinations in connection with the South Kensington Science and Art Department begin in different centres of the colony on sth June.

Supreme Court Sittings.

The Pierard case was again before the Supreme- Court this morning, when Doth the Chief Justice and Edwards threw on the Crown the onus of taking the initiative if there was to be a new trial and as no application was made they discharged accused.

Fire Insurance.

F. B. Redgrave, of Nelson, won the prize awarded by the Insurance Institute of New Zealand for the essay on the principles of connecting fire insurance with business.
