RETURN OF COMMONWEALTH CONTINGENT.
[per press association.]
Wellington This Day. The Monowai with the New Zealand Contingent which attended the opening of the Commonwealth Parliament passed Cape Farewell at 810 this morning and should arrive here about 6 to-night. The Contingent from Melbourne paraded in front of the Post Office at 10.30, where the Premier delivered a short address welcoming them back, and complimented them on their appearance and the way they had represented the colony. No finer body of men had ever left any shore to uphold the honor of their country. Thcir’s, however, has been a peaceful mission, and if there was any conquest it must have been over the hearts of Australian ladies—a remark which raised a hearty laugh. The Premier called for three cheers for the men which were given with goodwill, and then one was given for Scddon himself, after which the troops marched through the town. Their physique and fine bearing excited admiration among those who had not before seen them paraded.
